Climbing Photography Workshop

August 23, 2025 - Stone Age Midtown

Want to learn how to take better photos (fewer buttshots) with your phone at the crag? Have a fancy camera and don’t know how to use it? Want to learn to ascend a rope and not drop your heavy-ass camera on your buddy’s head? This workshop is for you!

Eric Bowes (www.bowesphoto.ca) and Ben Minegar (www.bensnapsphoto.com) will be running a free climbing photography workshop at Stone Age Midtown, Saturday August 23 running from 10 am to 3 pm. Space is limited to 14 people, and will be first come first serve - to secure your spot, please register using the form below!

This workshop is open to all levels of photographic and climbing skill (participants should know how to use an assisted belay device, e.g. GriGri, and be comfortable with toprope climbing). Topics covered will include tech talk (shutter speeds, focal lengths, etc), composition, rope skills (including ascending), and gear management while shooting on a rope.

Required Equipment List:

  • Something to shoot with (camera or smartphone)

  • Harness

  • Grigi or other assisted braking device + locking carabiners (2-3)

  • Personal Anchor

  • Grippy shoes (very comfy climbing shoes, approach shoes, grippy trail runners)

  • A way to take notes

  • Lunch/snacks (will not be provided)

Optional Gear List (please bring if you have!):

  • Mini-trax or other progress capture pulley

  • Camera bag/fanny pack/capture clip to secure phone/camera

  • Belay gloves (fingerless preferred)

  • Aiders

  • Ascenders
